Farmers are getting benefits from crop diversification
Raipur, 12 May 2025
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai, the Chhattisgarh Government is encouraging various innovations for increasing the income of farmers and sustainable development of the agriculture sector. In this series, farmers of Jashpur district are being encouraged to cultivate crops like maize, pulses and oilseeds instead of traditional paddy cultivation in the summer season. The Agriculture Department is promoting crop diversification by providing quality seeds, necessary inputs and technical guidance to farmers.
Mr. Arun Kumar Bhagat, a farmer resident of village Chechandand of Pathalgaon development block, has also adopted this initiative of the government and is cultivating maize instead of summer paddy. He has planted maize variety Corn-9544 in one hectare of field, for which he received seeds and other necessary inputs from the Agriculture Department.
Farmer Arun Bhagat said that there is a possibility of getting a net profit of about 35 thousand rupees per hectare from this variety of maize. He said that maize cultivation requires less water than traditional paddy and the production cost is also relatively less. With the guidance and support received from the government schemes, he is cultivating maize for the first time by changing the crop. Farmer Arun Bhagat expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai and said that crop diversification is beneficial for farmers.
It is noteworthy that this strategy of crop diversification is proving to be an important step towards sustainability in agriculture sector, water conservation and increase in farmers’ income.
